  • Fibromyalgia - More On Fibromyalgia

    What is Fibromyalgia?

Since there are so many aspects to fibromyalgia, it bodes well to look more carefully into some aspects of fibromyalgia syndrome when trying to understand what is fibromyalgia. One of the more interesting aspects is due to the affect on the mental health of sufferers.
What Is Fibromyalgia? Lack Of Serotonin

Firmly linked to a lack of serotonin, fibromyalgia could even be caused by this lack. Serotonin, produced in the brain, controls our moods. This is one of the possible reasons that fibromyalgics suffer with depression, and anxiety. This is just one aspect of the question what is fibromyalgia?

Serotonin is stored in the gut, to the extent that 95% of serotonin is there. This is why often patients with fibromyalgia also suffer with IBS. IBS or irritable bowel syndrome can be extremely severe, and cause the patient to suffer from leakage and incontinence of the bowel. There are many more questions than answers when we start asking what is fibromyalgia.
What Is Fibromyalgia - Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Perhaps it is understandable why a person would be depressed with constant pain and fatigue, and the risk of incontinence. Medication will help with this serious problem though.

For IBS to be so bad that it makes a patient completely unable to function is very rare. Secondly there is good medication for irritable bowel syndrome. Imodium and mebeverine are effective against the spasming and diarrhea of irritable bowel syndrome This means you can go out and about and not worry about the toilet all the time.

Many physicans advocate talking therapy. Counselling is what we would refer to it as. Counselling is a wonderful way of having some time and space to speak to an non-judgemental outside observer. Counselling can be helpful in reducing stress, which has a hugely positive effect on fibromyalgia. Regular visits to a counsellor specializing in NLP - neuro-linguistic programming - mean that you would not necessarily have to dwell on negative experiences in the past. A good counsellor will give you the skills to continue on your own, working out your difficulties.

Spending time on yourself is a great way to learn what you need to work on when suffering from fibromyalgia. One other thing I would encourage every sufferer to do is to keep a journal. By writing down a diary of emotional feelings, a pain diary and a food diary, you will see patterns that can help you diagnose which foods are triggers for you, and which situations to avoid. If you can do this, and work on reducing your stress, you will find that you have the keys to treat many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia yourself.

The more you know about fibromyalgia the more you will be able to help yourself to manage the symptoms, be aware of the treatments and be able to explain to people when they inevitably ask what is fibromyalgia?

  • What is Fibromyalgia?

For those who have read anything about fibromyalgia, or are wondering what is fibromyalgia?, then you will be aware that it is a disorder that affects the joints and muscles in the body. It is painful, fatigue, and a whole host of other symptoms including sleep disorders, irritable bowel syndrome and depression.

    Fibromyalgia Treatment

Some research has shown that fibromyalgia is caused by a bacterial process, but this is not yet proved conclusive. Because the real cause is not yet properly known, and scientists are still wondering what is fibromyalgia, doctors primarily treat the symptoms of fibromyalgia, as a cure isn't yet known.

What's Fibromyalgia - The Effects Of Stress

One of the main things that exacerbate fibromyalgia symptoms is stress. Lots of people know that stress is a killer in that it raises blood pressure and can be associated with heart attacks. Stress is also responsible for the worsening of numerous conditions, including fibromyalgia. It can cause severe fibromyalgia flare up. One of the questions that must definitely be asked along with what is fibromyalgia is why is it affected by stress.

Stress causes muscles to tense up. When we are stressed we may clench our teeth together, bunch in the muscles in our foreheads, but much of the stress we suffer is gathered in our shoulders. Unfortunately most fibromyalgia patients have numerous tender spots in their shoulder region which is made worse by stress.

    What's Fibromyalgia - Positive Stress

Interestingly, stress could be sectioned into positive stress and negative stress. Positive stress could be linked to something one is excited about, like a wedding, or perhaps a holiday. Even if one is looking forward to an event which they will enjoy, this is likely to cause positive stress. And even positive stress can have an impact on fibromyalgia.

Whenever a patient has started to handle their fibromyalgia then these celebrations or positive stress high points in everyday life can be planned and thoroughly managed. Reducing all other stress is a good way to make sure that a patients stress levels do not reach too high. Getting help to make sure all jobs are done is another method to make sure stress is not too high a level, since it is very easy to be stressed when one feels there are lots of things to get done.

If positive stress could be managed, this is an excellent outcome. It will not only help the patient to be more confident in their management of the disorder, but will also boost the patients self-esteem. The long lasting results of high self-esteem are well documented but include a boost to the mental health of the patient which again will have a positive affect on fibromyalgia.

So by looking over this article and making yourself aware, you will be able to more satisfactorily answer the question what is fibromyalgia.
